Key concepts and clinical tips for success in endodontic treatment

Abstract

Endodontic treatment is considered one of the most technique-sensitive clinical procedures in dentistry. The more predictable we can make each step of the process, the greater our confidence to tackle endodontic cases that present in our practice. Often-times when we come across an unexpected difficulty or complication, its root cause can be tracked back to some inconsistency during a previous step of the procedure. Therefore, attention to detail is paramount at every stage; within this context it is useful to establish efficient ways to check our progress at successive points throughout treatment.

A deep understanding of certain key concepts, together with adopting a critical approach to each individual case, help us devise a customised treatment plan to address the anticipated challenges, instead of relying solely on a fixed protocol. What information can we glean from the pre-operative radiograph that may guide our treatment protocol? What is an essential prerequisite before even commencing root canal treatment on a tooth? What basic concepts can lead to predictable access and facilitate the chemo-mechanical preparation of root canals? How can we increase predictability of the obturation process? From the pre-operative assessment through to the completion of treatment, each step involves details that can make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful treatment, between a smooth and pleasant or a tough and stressful evening in the office. The purpose of this presentation is not to outline all possible factors affecting endodontic outcomes; it is rather to focus on a number of key concepts which significantly increase predictability of each step of treatment. It is also to share practical knowledge and every-day clinical tips that can be readily used by general practitioners performing endodontics in their own practice.
