Could an endodontic treatment be repeated?
Sometimes a treatment that has failed for some reason can be repeated. It is very important that you discuss with your doctor the reasons of this failure and if they can be overcome.
If you choose to do an endodontic retreatment, the Endodontist will regain access in the inner part of your tooth by removing all the restorative materials or by passing through them, if it’s possible and advised. After he/she removes all the material from the older filling of the root canals, the endodontist will re-clean and disinfect thoroughly the root canals using modern means of magnification and illumination (such as magnifying lens with light or the clinical microscope), will search thoroughly for any additional root canals which were not cleaned the first time or some special tooth morphology that needs extra attention.
After the tooth gets cleaned properly, the Endodontist will refill the root canals with special filling material making sure that there will be no future reinfection. It is important to visit your dentist again, after the endodontic retreatment, because a new restoration may be indicated.
In case the retreatment of the root canals is not possible, the Endodontist will suggest alternative treatments, such as the surgical approach (apicoectomy, hemisection).
