Emergency care of an avulsed tooth
Timely and immediate treatment of an avulsed tooth is very important. The tooth should be found and immediately transferred to a dental office. The tooth should be kept moist by placing it in a cup of cold milk or in some commercially available transfer solutions. There are scientifically designed storage media that provide the ideal conditions to maintain the viability of the cells on the root surface thus increasing the success rate of a replanted tooth. The best known storage media is Hank's balanced salt solution, commercially available as Save-A-Tooth. The milk although is not ideal storage solution, it has the advantage of being easily available.
Storage conditions and the length of time are of outmost importance for the successful replantation of the tooth.
